In 1945, while taking a walk on Rideau Street (at the time Main Street in downtown Ottawa), Goldie Abramson saw that Hunts Candy Shop was closing because of the sugar shortage due to the war. She knew that Ottawa was missing a store that catered to the needs of parents and kids, especially during the start of what we now know as the “Baby Boom”.
The idea of renting that space (all 200 square feet) and starting Ottawa’s baby store was very exiting to Goldie (better known as Mrs. A), her husband Charlie and her brother Hy (or Mr. H). So with borrowed money and an 18 month lease, they opened the doors of Kiddytown Ltd. Their dream had become a reality. Their mentality was simply: Provide Ottawa with quality kids/baby furniture and clothing, along with excellent service, and the lowest prices in the city.
As Kiddytown continued to grow, expanding from one store to its peak of 6 stores across Eastern Ontario, more family joined. Currently Hy’s daughters, Goldie’s nieces, run the day-to-day operations of Kiddytown’s 3 Ottawa locations.
Sadly, Goldie and Charlie have passed on. But their dream of providing the city of Ottawa with service, selection and value, in baby and children’s products still lives strong in the Kiddytown family today.
